Differences Between the U.S. and Mexico

Monday, December 31, 2007

As many of you know, we have been in Mexico for almost 2 weeks now. This is my 4th or 5th time here in Veracruz, and the more I come, the more I like it. Besides the beautiful ocean and the perfect weather (at least this time of year) life here really is a lot more simple. I thought for those of you who have never been, I'd give a little compare and contrast. Here are some things I like and dislike about Mexico (compared to the U.S.).

Likes:

1. The prices!! We eat out here almost twice each day. Yesterday we were 4 plus Emma, ate like pigs, and paid $15 including tip! And the food was really delicious. Besides food, labor here is super cheap as well. You can get a maid to come to your house and clean 5 days a week for half a day for $40 a week. You can get your broken watch fixed for 50 cents or your prescriptions bought for a fraction of the price.

2. The market (el mercado). This is where the locals shop for groceries. Here is where you find the freshest of the fresh. Fish, chicken, beef, pork, veggies, fruits, spices, herbs, and places to eat to try it all out! If you look at the last post, you'll see a picture of tomatoes with a sign saying 1 kilo for 8 pesos. That means you get roughly 2 pounds of tomatoes for about 75 cents! Yesterday we ate a huge moharra (I don't know if it's the same word in English and I couldn't find a translation) and we chose the fish and watched the guy skin it and chop it right in front of us, and I think it was like $7 bucks!

3. Because "affordable" lines of credit don't exist here (not yet at least) people drive and live in what they can afford. It's refreshing to see very few new cars on the road here. It's also neat to know that the roof you are under is paid off. That's how it is here - people pay with cash. We went to Costco the other day and there were 2 different prices for the items I wanted to buy. A price if I used a credit card, and a price if I paid with debit or cash. The cash price was lower by a couple dollars.

4. Party, dance, laugh, eat. Here parties are big. Kids get loads of candy when they go to birthday parties because of gift baggies and pinatas. New Year's Day is one of the biggest parties of the year. And of course partying wouldn't be complete without dancing! Salsa, Merengue, Bachata, and Danzon are just a few of the styles of dance you see here on a regular basis. Everybody here knows how to dance and have a good time. It's not rude to laugh loudly at a restaurant, but it is rude if a stranger interrupts your eating without wishing you a good meal.

To be continued...

In the meantime, here are some more pictures of goose baby

Emma's First Christmas

Wednesday, December 26, 2007

Well, it wasn't what I had in mind, but Emma's first Christmas was yesterday. I remember last Christmas we bought her presents and put them under the tree with ours. We were so excited for her to show up.

So, the big event was Christmas Eve when we all ate dinner together at Emmanuel's mom's. We had turkey with potatoes. Emmanuel's brother, Chucho, was in town and hadn't seen Emmanuel in 10 years. He MADE us stay up until 2 in the morning talking to him, and we were so tired that we just crashed at their place (we put Emma to sleep there hours before anyway). So, you can imagine when our human alarm clock squawked at 7 am we were not happy. We then had to go back to his sister's to change and take showers, but I fell asleep and Emmanuel left me there for 2 hours! So we didn't get to Christmas activities until the evening :-). We ate leftovers and opened presents around 4. Emma throws whatever present she gets aside and plays with the paper. It's a good thing my in-laws have a good sense of humor, because they saw every minute of it. Be sure to look closely at the pictures (they are in order) to see what I'm talking about (she's pushing the gift away and Angel is laughing).

The guy in the pictures with Emma is Abuelo/Grandpa Angel.

P.S. On Christmas Day Emma stood for like 4 minutes straight!

In Veracruz We Are

Sunday, December 23, 2007

After 3 days of driving, we made it safe to Veracruz, Mexico. The trip down was a real pain, but we are really proud of our little trooper Emma and are happy to be settling down into a normal routine of play and sleep for baby.

There's not much time to write, but here are some pictures you might find interesting...

The first one is the dreaded crib the first night we stayed in a hotel with Emma. She ended up sleeping in between us. I do NOT recommend co-sleeping. The only one who gets sleep (as my mom can attest) is the kid.

Getting Ready for Christmas!

Wednesday, December 19, 2007

Here you see Emma trying to get to the ornaments. They are all about 3 feet from the bottom of the tree and in the back. Here she tries to get to the ones in the back and still stay on her feet.

And the latter pictures are (sorry I'm still working out this formatting thing)

Mmm mmm good! Mommy made marshmallows, and after she and papi licked all they could off, they gave them to me! And then I was so sticky I needed to soak in the bath!

On a side note, we leave for Mexico today, so we might not post for a while, but we will have some fun posts later!

Emma's 11 Months Old

Friday, December 14, 2007

Well, the infamous 1 year birthday is approaching much faster than I expected it would. But, we'll talk about that at 1 year! Right now, Emma is plugging along at milestones and can:

Stand without help for about 30 sec. at a time

Say "baby" (A couple of days ago, we were in the car waiting for Emmanuel to get out of work and I was reading Parents magazine with Emma and pointing to the babies and saying "baby" or "baby boy/girl" and then I looked at Emma and said, "now Emma, say ba-by" and she repeated it right back to me! She's been saying it ever since!

Clap her hands. She does this to the tune of "if you're happy and you know it" and when the audience claps on the TV when I watch the Rachael Ray show haha!!

She also loves to bat at the Christmas tree ornaments and push things?!? I know this sounds weird, but you'll see in the video! She's strong as an ox (a girl ox though haha I don't know if there's a different word for that)!

This video pretty much sums it up: In the first segment, Emma is pushing the mattress, in the second she says "baby" (listen carefully), and in the 3rd Emma stands without help!

Viejito

Monday, December 10, 2007

Why the wacko pictures? Well, weeks ago, Emmanuel decided to teach Emma a new trick. In Mexico, the way to describe a wrinkled up nose is the "viejito" (vee-a-hee-toe) which means, roughly, little old guy (look at the 1st picture and you'll get it). So Emmanuel taught Emma how to make the viejito face, and of course, she's been doing it ever since. Trouble is, sometimes it's hard to get her to smile normal. This weekend when we were in a restaurant, she kept "flirting" as we call it with the people at the table next to us. She was smiling and waving and viejito-ing. I wonder how the people would have reacted if we were in Mexico! I guess we'll find out here in a few weeks, because it doesn't look like the wrinkled nose is going anywhere (especially because we can't help but laugh when she does it).

Welcome to our new blog!

Sunday, December 9, 2007

Hello Texan style (y'all)! After a year of playing with this thing, we've decided to upgrade to a family blog. (That's why we have the new name and address.) Emma's website will stay where it is and we will continue to post there in Spanish and in English. This new blog will be mostly in English unless I can get Emmanuel to do some posting :-) only because I plan on posting more often, and I just don't have the time! This will be more of a journal-type blog about what is going on in our lives, while Emma's blog will mostly be pictures with headings. But of course a HUGE part of our lives is Emma, so don't think it will be boring old us! So, to begin with, it's just boring old us haha. Last night (Sat.) we went to a company party, and it was huge! There were some odd 20,000 people there. The band Chicago was playing while people ate dinner and desserts. It was such a huge event that we couldn't find the friends we were going to hang out with once we got separated. Meanwhile, Emma was getting babysat at the Coxs'. It was nice to go on a date! Emmanuel and I really appreciate those alone moments to hold hands! And we got to get all dressed up...
